Art Basel Miami Beach 2026: A Sharper Focus

Each December, the art world turns towards Miami Beach. This year it will find a fair that has deliberately made itself smaller — and, Art Basel believes, stronger. Art Basel Miami Beach returns to the Miami Beach Convention Center from December 4 to 6, 2026, with VIP Preview Days on December 2 and 3, bringing together 272 exhibitors from more than 40 countries and territories for what remains the most significant commercial moment in the United States art market calendar.

The headline change is the floor itself. Unique among Art Basel's shows for its single-floor format, Miami Beach will occupy approximately 12 percent less space in 2026, organised around four hospitality plazas instead of five. The Galleries sector, with 204 exhibitors, will feature roughly 10 percent fewer galleries, and blue-chip names previously grouped in one area will be distributed throughout the hall — longer sightlines, closer encounters between programmes of different scales and geographies, and, in the fair's words, room for each presentation to command attention.

"The redesign begins with the galleries: how their artists and programs are presented, and how collectors encounter them," said Bridget Finn, Director of Art Basel Miami Beach. "Our exhibitors have reinforced the value of a more focused environment, and the smaller footprint is a deliberate choice in service of that. Each presentation will have room to command attention. When collectors move beyond familiar routes, discovery follows — and that is where the most meaningful conversations begin."

Around the main sector, the architecture of the fair remains rich. Kabinett will present 26 focused displays within exhibitors' booths; Nova, 20 galleries showing new work by up to three artists; Positions, 12 solo projects by emerging artists; and Survey, 16 historically focused presentations by 18 galleries. More than 30 galleries participate for the first time, most through these project-based sectors, and five countries — The Bahamas, Estonia, Georgia, Ghana and Hungary — are represented at the fair for the first time.

The Americas are present in depth: more than two-thirds of exhibitors operate spaces in the region. Brazil once again forms the show's third-largest national contingent, with anchors including Nara Roesler, Mendes Wood DM and A Gentil Carioca; Los Angeles contributes 23 galleries across the sectors; Chicago is led in Galleries by Gray, moniquemeloche, Document, Patron and Mariane Ibrahim; and South Florida's own scene is strengthened, with Spinello Projects and Piero Atchugarry Gallery advancing into the main sector. El Apartamento, the first Cuba-based gallery to participate in the fair, returns in Galleries.

Zero 10, Art Basel's initiative for art of the digital era, returns with Generation, its largest presentation to date: 19 projects by artists including Jon Rafman, Refik Anadol, Random International, Sarah Meyohas and Studio Drift, presented by 21 galleries and platforms and curated by Karen Archey with Eli Scheinman. Nicole Sales Giles joins as Zero 10's first Global Head. "The exhibition's title points towards a productive double meaning," Archey said: "to 'generation' as the computational process through which images, forms, and experiences are produced, and to a new generation of artists reckoning with the systems and imaginaries of the digital age."

Beyond the convention centre, the fair's public programme is free and open to all: the Turrell Art Foundation and Art Basel, supported by Pace Gallery, will unveil a significant new body of work by James Turrell outdoors, while in Collins Park, Public Art Fund presents Between Tides — six artist-designed ping-pong tables by Moko Fukuyama, Ilana Harris-Babou, Las Hermanas Iglesias, Carlos H. Matos, Amalia Pica and SUPERFLEX, inviting the city to play. Across Greater Miami, museum highlights include exhibitions at The Bass, Pérez Art Museum Miami and the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami.

The week also brings the second edition of the Art Basel Awards, presented in partnership with BOSS. The 2026 Medalists span nine categories and include Barbara Kruger, Jenny Holzer, Arthur Jafa, Julie Mehretu, Howardena Pindell, María Magdalena Campos-Pons and Theaster Gates, alongside Laurie Anderson, Hilton Als and the Studio Museum in Harlem Artist-in-Residence Program. The Gold Awardees will be revealed at the Official Art Basel Awards Night on Thursday, December 3, at the New World Center.

A smaller fair, then — but a sharper one. GEN DE ART will be in Miami Beach this December to report from the floor, and our winter print issue will debut at the fair.

Art Basel Miami Beach takes place December 4–6, 2026, at the Miami Beach Convention Center, with VIP Preview Days on December 2–3. Global Lead Partner: UBS.
