Buchmann Galerie Unveils Special Exhibition Program for 30th Anniversary Celebration

Buchmann Galerie is marking its milestone 30th anniversary with an exciting lineup of special exhibitions throughout 2025, showcasing works by the gallery's most celebrated artists. The Berlin-based contemporary art gallery, known for its focus on painting and sculpture, has curated a program that honors its rich legacy while looking toward the future.

Anniversary Exhibition Series

The centerpiece of the anniversary celebrations will be a series of rotating exhibitions featuring significant works by artists who have shaped the gallery's identity over the past three decades. Beginning in March 2025, the main gallery space in Berlin will host a special retrospective highlighting key moments in the gallery's history through iconic works.

You will have the opportunity to see masterpieces by Tony Cragg, whose sculptural innovations were first presented at Buchmann Galerie in 2002. These works, which take the human face as a starting point for form exploration, represent a pivotal moment in the British sculptor's career and in the gallery's development.

The exhibition program will also feature Daniel Buren's early stripe paintings from 1965-66, which were first shown as a complete group at Buchmann Galerie. These historically significant works established the French artist's distinctive visual language and have rarely been displayed together since their initial presentation at the gallery.

Immersive Installation Works

A highlight of the anniversary program will be the recreation of Wolfgang Laib's immersive lacquer room installation. First presented at Buchmann Galerie before traveling to the prestigious Fondation Beyeler in Basel, this elongated walk-in space made of wooden panels with black and red Burmese lacquer creates a transcendent experience that embodies the gallery's commitment to transformative art.

In the adjacent Buchmann Box exhibition space, visitors will discover special presentations from Tony Cragg's drawing archive, exclusively represented by the gallery. These drawings provide unique insight into the creative process of one of today's most important sculptors and reveal the conceptual foundations of his three-dimensional works.

New Works by Gallery Artists

The anniversary celebration isn't only about looking back—Buchmann Galerie will also present new works created specifically for the occasion by their roster of contemporary artists. Bettina Pousttchi, whose international career was launched through her exhibitions at the gallery, will unveil a new sculptural installation that builds upon her acclaimed "Double Monuments" series.

Japanese artist Tatsuo Miyajima, known for his LED installations exploring concepts of time, will present a new site-specific work that responds to the gallery's architectural space and history.

International Exhibition Partnerships

As part of the anniversary program, Buchmann Galerie has organized special partnerships with international institutions. Select works by gallery artists will be featured in coordinated exhibitions at museums including M+ in Hong Kong, the Istanbul Modern Museum, and as part of Chemnitz European Capital of Culture 2025, where Tony Cragg's monumental sculpture "Stack" is on permanent display.

"This anniversary year is both a celebration of our past achievements and a platform for new artistic visions," says André Buchmann, founder and director of the gallery. "We've created a program that honors the incredible artists who have trusted us with their work over three decades while continuing to provide space for experimentation and innovation."
