TOKYO GENDAI 2026: A New Capter In Global Contemporary Art Opens In Yokohama

Japan’s leading international contemporary art fair returns to PACIFICO Yokohama from 11–13 September 2026.

Tokyo Gendai will present 63 galleries from Japan, Asia, Europe, the Americas and Oceania across five exhibition sectors, including the newly launched Miki “Trunk” and the return of the digital-focused Tane “Seed.”

Tokyo Gendai, one of Japan’s largest international fairs dedicated to contemporary art, will hold its fourth edition at PACIFICO Yokohama from 11–13 September 2026. An invitation-only preview and vernissage will take place on 10 September.

Bringing together galleries and artists from Japan and across the world, the fair will offer an ambitious and diverse presentation of contemporary art. From internationally recognised artists and historically significant figures to emerging talents shaping the future, Tokyo Gendai provides an opportunity to experience the forefront of today’s global art ecosystem.

FIVE SECTORS CONNECTING TRADITION AND INNOVATION

The 2026 edition will be organised across five principal sectors: Galleries, Hana “Flower,” Eda “Branch,” Miki “Trunk” and Tane “Seed.”

Galleries, the fair’s main sector, will feature multi-artist presentations by leading international galleries, including Pace Gallery, Sadie Coles HQ, Taka Ishii Gallery, TARO NASU, KOTARO NUKAGA, Gana Art, Ceysson & Bénétière, The Page Gallery and A Lighthouse called Kanata.

Taka Ishii Gallery will present new works by New York-based artist Adam Pendleton, alongside paintings by Kaede Nagasawa and works by Takuma Oue. TARO NASU will bring together artists including Mika Tajima, Benoît Piéron and Ryan Gander, examining distinctive conceptual, material and perceptual approaches to contemporary society.

Gana Art will introduce five artists who capture and reinterpret fleeting moments, while The Page Gallery will present works by Choi Myoung Young, a master of Korea’s Dansaekhwa movement, and Park Suk Won, a pioneer of Korean contemporary sculpture.

KOTARO NUKAGA will show works by artists including José Parlá, Tomokazu Matsuyama, Keita Morimoto, Tomona Matsukawa, Michael Rikio Ming Hee Ho, Nanami Inoue, Akiko Ueda, Rei Kizumoto, Takehiro Iikawa and Stefan Brüggemann.

Hana “Flower” is dedicated to solo and group presentations by emerging and mid-career artists. Highlights include a new body of work by Yukino Yamanaka, created specifically for Tokyo Gendai and presented by CON_; Zac Langdon-Pole’s exploration of belonging with Lett Thomas; and new works by Kako Shirahata and Yuka Mori, presented by Yutaka Kikutake Gallery.

Eda “Branch” will feature solo and curated presentations devoted to established and historically significant artists. Ippodo Gallery will bring together six contemporary Japanese artists exploring the intersections of tradition, nature and contemporary society. Mizoe Art Gallery will present a solo exhibition of Japanese sculptor Tomonori Toyofuku, known for combining Japanese sculptural traditions with Western conceptions of space.

A NEW SECTOR DEVOTED TO WORKS ON PAPER

Newly established for 2026, Miki “Trunk” celebrates works using paper as their principal medium, including photography, drawing and printmaking.

The sector honours the longstanding importance of paper-based techniques within Japanese visual culture while introducing new interpretations by contemporary artists. Participating galleries include BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY, Revolver Galería, John Szoke Gallery, The Tolman Collection and UP Gallery.

BANGKOK CITYCITY GALLERY will present five Thai artists working with photography and moving images, including Apichatpong Weerasethakul, while Revolver Galería will explore the transformation of text, surfaces and printed matter through works by José Luis Martinat and Jerry B. Martin.

TANE “SEED” RETURNS WITH DIGITAL ART AND A TAIWAN FOCUS

Returning after a two-year absence, Tane “Seed” will examine creative practices involving NFT, animation, video, augmented reality, virtual reality and gaming.

For the first time, the sector will also include a special project highlighting selected Taiwanese galleries and artists. Chi-Wen will present FAMEME’s Fancy Fantasy!, while Project Fulfill Art Space will show two works by Chang Hsu Chan. Double Square Gallery will present We Are Not Performing by Tsai Kuan-Yu.

Other highlights include Marina Abramović’s avatar project, supported and presented by TAEX, alongside works by Kevin Abosch and Francesco D’Isa. Takuro Someya Contemporary Art will present Ryoichi Kurokawa, whose work moves between sound and image, data and materiality, incorporating the viewer’s body into the experience.

A PLATFORM FOR DIALOGUE, DISCOVERY AND EXCHANGE

Beyond the gallery presentations, Tokyo Gendai will offer a diverse public programme of talks, installations and performances. Further details will be announced from July.

Fair Director Eri Takane commented that Tokyo Gendai has developed into “a true celebration of contemporary art in Japan,” bringing together emerging galleries working with younger artists and internationally established names. She added that the fair seeks to provide a space open to both the practices that have shaped art over centuries and the new creative experiments defining its future.

Co-founder Magnus Renfrew emphasised Japan’s growing importance within the global cultural scene and art market, reaffirming Tokyo Gendai’s mission to encourage cross-cultural exchange and introduce international audiences to the breadth and quality of contemporary art in Japan.
