MoMA, Centre Pompidou and M+ Form a Cultural Alliance Across Three Continents
Three of the world's defining museums of modern and contemporary art — The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, the Centre Pompidou in Paris and M+ in Hong Kong — have announced an unprecedented cultural alliance that will see them develop exhibitions and programmes together from their collections, and deepen their collaboration in curatorial research and conservation. Announced on 30 October 2026 by MoMA's David Rockefeller Director Christophe Cherix, Centre Pompidou President Laurent Le Bon and M+ Museum Director Suhanya Raffel, the alliance brings together institutions that together welcome 10 million visitors a year in person and reach 125 million people online. Each museum will retain its independence and distinct identity — while achieving together what none could accomplish alone.

One Collection's Worth of Ambition, Three Continents
The museum leaders signed a Framework Agreement for the alliance the same day at an event at M+, in the presence of trustees and stakeholders of all three institutions. Under the alliance, the museums will co-develop exhibitions and programmes drawn on their exceptional collections, and work more closely together on curatorial research and conservation. Combined, their holdings form an extraordinarily broad, deep and interdisciplinary treasury of twentieth- and twenty-first-century creativity. With these resources — and an unprecedented operating footprint spanning three continents — the three institutions aim to broaden how modern and contemporary art is understood, interpreted and experienced in an increasingly interconnected world, reflecting a creative practice that moves between cultures and is rooted in more than one of them, and bringing a diversity of perspectives to bear through their pooled expertise.

1929, 1977, 2021
Each of the three has, in its own era, proposed a new model for the museum that collects the art of its time. MoMA was founded in 1929, the Centre Pompidou in 1977, and M+ in 2021. Their origins and their geographical and cultural settings differ, but they share a commitment to education and to living artists.
"Embassies for One Another"
"This cultural alliance makes our museums embassies for each other, in effect creating an extraordinary gateway that opens onto three continents. We will now be able to give our visitors direct access to the depth and breadth of all three institutions," said Christophe Cherix, MoMA's David Rockefeller Director. "Beyond expanding our reach to an unprecedented level, the cultural alliance also deepens intellectual exchange, as we align our programming, organize joint exhibitions, preserve art, and unite audiences worldwide, allowing us to function as more than the sum of our parts."
"No single institution can encompass the entire scope of global creativity. We aim to work on a broader and deeper level," said Laurent Le Bon, President of the Centre Pompidou. "Our cultural alliance will, among other initiatives, enable long-term loans, deepening the presentation of key artists and movements."
"Museums must evolve to reflect the complexity of our world. This cultural alliance brings together three leading collecting institutions united by a shared commitment to supporting artistic innovation and expanding public engagement through research and exchange," said Suhanya Raffel, Museum Director of M+. "As Asia's global museum of contemporary visual culture, M+ brings perspectives from Hong Kong and our region to this dialogue. We hope to create new opportunities for artists and audiences, shape a more cooperative and sustainable future for museums, and reimagine how cultural narratives resonate around the world."
