The Balvenie announces a collaboration with world-renowned contemporary artist, Daniel Arsham

In the world of fine whisky, craftsmanship is often spoken of in terms of heritage and patience. Yet few houses embody this philosophy as poetically as The Balvenie. This spring, the storied Speyside distillery unveiled one of its most ambitious creative collaborations to date: The Dawn of Our Spirit, a landmark partnership with internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Daniel Arsham.
Announced in Dufftown, Scotland on May 12, 2026, the collaboration brings together Arsham’s sculptural exploration of time and materiality with The Balvenie’s deeply rooted whisky-making traditions. Developed alongside The Balvenie’s Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie, the project will unfold through a multi-layered artistic programme celebrating the distillery’s celebrated “Five Rare Crafts” — barley cultivation, traditional floor malting, copper stills, cooperage, and the intuitive artistry of the malt master.
Far beyond a conventional brand collaboration, The Dawn of Our Spirit positions whisky as a cultural and artistic medium. Across Asia and the United States, McKechnie and Arsham will curate immersive sensory experiences that explore the dialogue between craftsmanship, memory, and creation. At the center of the initiative lies a forthcoming hand-crafted whisky collection, including an ultra-rare release and collectible limited editions artistically interpreted by Arsham himself.
For Arsham, whose work often blurs the boundaries between sculpture, architecture, archaeology, and speculative futures, the collaboration represents a natural extension of his long-standing fascination with time. His iconic “eroded” aesthetic — objects appearing as though excavated from another era — resonates unexpectedly yet beautifully with the slow maturation and generational continuity of whisky making.
The project also draws inspiration from one of The Balvenie’s most symbolic spaces: its historic Home Floor Maltings, in operation since approximately 1931 and still largely unchanged today. Within these quietly enduring walls, notions of longevity, ritual, and human touch become central themes of exploration.
Kelsey McKechnie described the collaboration as “a creative dialogue exploring the enduring character of our spirit,” emphasizing the role of artistry, innovation, and human endeavor across generations. Meanwhile, Arsham reflected on his admiration for The Balvenie’s dedication to traditional whisky-making methods, noting that the partnership is rooted in “a shared respect for both process and time.”

At a moment when luxury increasingly seeks authenticity and emotional resonance, The Dawn of Our Spirit stands apart for its sincerity. Rather than merely merging art and whisky aesthetically, the collaboration reveals the deeper parallels between the two disciplines: intuition, craftsmanship, material transformation, and the quiet pursuit of permanence in an impermanent world.
For The Balvenie, this partnership signals not only a celebration of heritage, but also an elegant reimagining of how whisky can engage with contemporary culture. Through the language of art, The Dawn of Our Spirit invites audiences to experience whisky not simply as a spirit, but as an enduring expression of time itself.
