Discoveries, Literature and the Pursuit of Peace

The 2026 Nobel Prizes, announced from 5 to 12 October, recognise ten laureates across six fields. This year’s honours range from a method of switching nerve cells on and off with light to the detection of particles arriving from deep space. They also acknowledge advances in molecular chemistry, a writer who crosses literary forms, the defence of international law and research into the forces that shape economic stability.

The five prizes established under Alfred Nobel’s will, together with the later prize in economic sciences, reflect distinct forms of achievement. Each offers a different account of how knowledge, imagination and public responsibility can alter our understanding of the world.

PHYSIOLOGY OR MEDICINE

Light-sensitive proteins lie at the heart of optogenetics, a technique that enables researchers to activate or silence selected nerve cells using light. By helping establish this approach, the three laureates gave neuroscientists a way to test how particular circuits contribute to movement, perception and behaviour, rather than merely observing brain activity from a distance.

PHYSICS

Francis Halzen

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory turns a vast volume of Antarctic ice into a detector for particles that rarely interact with matter. Halzen’s work helped make it possible to identify high-energy neutrinos arriving from beyond Earth. Because these particles can travel through regions that obscure light, they provide an additional means of investigating powerful events in the universe.

CHEMISTRY

Henri B. Kagan and Kenso Soai

Two molecules can contain the same atoms yet differ like a left and right hand. In chemical synthesis, producing one form rather than the other can be crucial, particularly when molecules interact with living systems. Kagan and Soai illuminated nonlinear effects and self-amplifying reactions that help explain how a small preference for one molecular form can become pronounced.

LITERATURE

Anne Carson

The Canadian poet, translator and classical scholar has made the boundaries between poetry, prose, essay and translation unusually fluid. Drawing on ancient Greek literature without treating it as a closed tradition, Carson brings classical voices into contemporary questions of love, loss and language. Her inventive forms challenge what a literary work can contain.

PEACE

Navanethem “Navi” Pillay

The South African jurist has spent decades working at the intersection of human rights and international justice. A former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights and judge at international criminal tribunals, Pillay has argued for accountability when grave abuses occur. The award recognises her sustained efforts to strengthen peace through international law.

ECONOMIC SCIENCES

Robert E. Hall and Michael Woodford

Why do changes in spending, employment and expectations spread through an entire economy, and what can policy do in response? Hall and Woodford helped develop macroeconomic analysis grounded in the decisions of households and businesses. Their work has informed the study of economic fluctuations and the design of policies intended to limit instability.
